This herding watchdog, the Shetland Sheepdog, which is popularly known as Sheltie, is found in Shetland of Scotland. This family pet is faithful, clever, jaunty and loving towards its family members, especially children, timid towards strangers and can easily be trained.
The Yakky Dog, the Spaniel, the Collie and the Pomeranian were the breeds that were crossed to develop this Shetland Sheepdog.
Appearance
Size: They are small in size and anywhere from 14-17”. They are about 12-15” high.
Colour: The Shetland Sheepdog is found in three main colours.
• Sable is the colour that is most common. This can be anywhere from golden from mahogany. Dark-brown spots are found on a light-coloured background.
• Blue merle - Four colours blend to make this kind, black, white, grey and tan.
• Tricolour having black, white and tan colours.
Coating: They have a double coat, a weather-resistant soft and dense undercoat. On the top lies fur which is long, coarse and water-repellant.
Their ears are slightly bent at the top, it has a strong bone structure, almond shaped and dark eyes, a black nose and a strong jaw.
Litter Size
Each litter consists of 4-6 free Shetland Sheepdog puppies.
Diet
Lamb, barley, fish, potato is the ideal food for a Shetland Sheepdog and the taboo foods are, beef, corn, and beet.
Preferred Environment
They are active, energetic and enjoy playing in open areas. As they run around, their natural herding tendency makes them chase birds and squirrels.
Lifespan
Shetland Sheepdogs live for 12-14 years.
